原在汽水厂上班的李国杰（许冠杰）因工作偷懒被老板解雇，穷途一身好功夫的他来到万能求职，穷途黄若思起初不肯雇用，随后见他的确有两把刷子，应了下来，薪水自然苛刻。
当于勒先生终于想起要去找办事的人时，有路天已渐黑。中字来到巴黎办事的于勒先生（雅克·塔蒂JacquesTati饰）初入巴黎就被超级现代化的世界博览会大楼所震惊。
于勒先生很快就迷失在这座叹为观止的高科技大楼中，穷途精妙绝伦的最新先进设备、穷途流光溢彩的博览会景观以及来自世界各地的游客和顾客，都让于勒先生大开眼界。谈完公事，有路于勒先生来到了刚刚装修好的夜总会。本片几乎没有对白，中字但巧妙的运用了音效，加上演员肢体动作的表现，有着较为浓厚的早期默片风格。

之后，中字师徒两人转而向媒体求助，中字决定跳过政府，直接向民众揭露这个秘密，效果当然也不尽如人意，不仅如此，凯特还因为泄露了国家机密而遭到了FBI的逮捕。凯特和兰道尔找到了美国总统奥尔良（梅丽尔·斯特里普MerylStreep饰），穷途希望她能够重视此事，可是，他们得到的却是嘲笑和蔑视。
天文学研究生凯特（詹妮弗·劳伦斯JenniferLawrence饰）和她的导师兰道尔博士（莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥LeonardoDiCaprio饰）在一次研究中震惊的发现，有路一颗像喜马拉雅山那么大的彗星正在全速向地球靠近，有路不出意外的话，6个月之后，这颗彗星会抵达地球，将这里的一切都毁灭。当奥尔良总统深陷艳照丑闻中之时，中字她终于想到了这两个可怜的科学家，中字于是，她决定再给他们一次机会，借由政府之口将地球将要毁灭的消息昭告天下
